Phil Kawalec

Philip Kawalec

PGY-1, Resident

Philip was born and raised in Winnipeg, a city he is proud to call home. After high school, he spent a year living in Poland, his ancestral home. He returned to Winnipeg and completed a general Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Manitoba, graduating with high distinction. In 2023, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Medicine, both completed at the University of Manitoba.

During his high school, undergraduate, and medical school years, Philip was involved in various research projects and extracurricular activities. Most of his research interests focused on investigating the mechanisms of cell death in response to chemotherapeutic agents. He was awarded NSERC funding to complete this work and presented it at national conferences. Apart from research, Philip was a member and later led several student groups with interests in Oncology, Neurosurgery, and Medical Innovation. Outside of the hospital, Philip enjoys travelling, hiking, running, and exploring new cuisines with his friends and family.

During his neurosurgical residency, Philip hopes to narrow down his subspecialty interests and continue engaging in meaningful research. He is excited to train in Manitoba and give back to the province that has raised him as he learns to become the best physician that he can be for his future patients.
